This telescope capable of showing you the moon, the planets, and a number of the brighter deep space objects. The full moon will nearly fill the supplied 25mm eyepiece. We suggest the addition of either a 9mm or 7mm eyepiece to get a closer look at the planets. Either of these will reveal the rings of Saturn or the bands and zones on Jupiter in a way that will pleasantly surprise any first time telescope user.

Celestron NexStar 4SE: Excellent for Beginning Observers

The NexStar 4SE computerized telescope features Maksutov-Cassegrain optics, providing higher contrast images of the moon and planets. The Celestron NexStar 4SE telescope is an ideal choice for beginners who are primarily interested in the moon, planets and is also a good choice for urban or suburban dwellers who have extensive local light pollution. This is a telescope that will allow you to see what can be from these challenging locations.

In the tradition of Celestron's famous orange optical tubes, the NexStar 4SE computerized telescope combines the classic heritage of the original orange tube telescopes with state-of-the-art features including a fully computerized operating system, flash upgradeable software, superior coatingsand Celestron's revolutionary SkyAlign telescope alignment software. SkyAlign is arguably one of the fastest and easiest go-to alignment methods available.

Once the NexStar 4SE is aligned, you are in the driver's seat. Simply choose an object from the menu, and the telescope will find it for you. Using Celestron's patented NexStar technology, the SE scopes have the ability to locate nearly 40,000 objects. All you have to do is look through the eyepiece and enjoy the view!

But what if you are a beginner and don't know what object to choose? Not to worry - let the intelligent NexStar 4SE give you a guided tour of the night sky! The "Tour" feature offers a customized list of the best objects in the sky to view based upon the time, date and your location. Not only can your NexStar 4SE find objects, it can teach you about them as well. Information on the most popular objects can be viewed on the LCD screen of the keypad. You can find instructions on how to use the keypad, referred to as the “hand control,” in the Celestron instruction manual and literature.

NexStar 4SE vs. 130 SLT: What to buy?

If you find yourself asking this question, you may rest assured that you are not alone. We get this question more often than you might think, given the similarity in price between these models. As is so often the case, there is no black and white answer; it depends upon what you want to use the telescope for. In the interests of keeping this short and simple, the NexStar 4SE is the better choice if your interests are primarily the moon and planets. Its longer focal length makes it easier to achieve high magnification without the use of Barlows or expensive eyepieces. It's also the better choice if you want to use it for bird watching and the like, because it presents an upright image. On the other hand, the NexStar 130 SLT has considerably more light gathering aperture and is a better choice if your primary interests are deep space objects. Having half the focal length of the NexStar 4SE means it can serve up twice the field of view, which is indispensable for seeing the entirety of the Andromeda Galaxy. The NexStar 130 SLT presents an inverted image, making it unsuitable for terrestrial observation.
