The NexStar 6SE is one of Celestron's most popular telescopes, and it is easy to see why. This is much more than a basic beginner's telescope, yet is easy to use for those with minimal experience. The capabilities of the NexStar computer object location system make it a joy to use. The total weight of 30 lbs makes the NexStar 6SE highly portable for its size. With six inches of aperture, you are equipped to observe well beyond the moon and planets of our own solar system. The full moon nearly fills the supplied 25mm eyepiece. Add a 9mm eyepiece (not included) and you easily see not only the rings of Saturn, but the Cassini division separating the two major rings. What's more, Celestron's revolutionary SkyAlign alignment software incorporated into the NexStar 6SE is arguably one of the fastest, easiest and most accurate go-to alignment procedures available today. All of this is priced well below $1000, making this telescope a phenomenal value!

Celestron NexStar 6SE: Our most popular Go To telescope priced under $1000

The Celestron NexStar 6SE telescope is our most popular computerized telescope priced under $1000, and it's easy to see why. This telescope combines the powerful Celestron NexStar computerized telescope operating system with enough light collecting aperture to allow you to truly enjoy many of the deep space objects within its catalog. We always advise first-time telescope buyers that six inches of aperture is where the realm of deep space objects becomes truly interesting. The Celestron NexStar 6SE telescope will easily resolve globular clusters and treat you to dozens upon dozens of the brighter galaxies and nebulae that are simply beyond the grasp of smaller telescopes.

Celestron's Revolutionary SkyAlign

The NexStar 6SE features Celestron's SkyAlign method of go to alignment. Using Celestron's patented SkyAlign, simply input the date, time and location into the keypad then point the telescope at any three widely separated bright celestial objects. The NexStar computer does the rest, identifying those objects using a simple triangulation technique. You do not need to know the names of the stars, you can even use bright planets for alignment. All you need to do is follow the directions on the NexStar hand control keypad, and you will be ready to start observing in just a few minutes. SkyAlign is fast, easy and accurate.

Using the NexStar 6SE

Perhaps you are new to the hobby and don't know what object to choose. Don't worry - let the intelligent NexStar SE give you a guided tour of the night sky. The "Tour" feature offers a customized list of the best objects in the sky to view for your exact time and location anywhere in the world! Not only can your NexStar SE find objects, but it can also teach you about them as well. Information on the most popular objects can be viewed on the LCD screen of the included computer keypad. You can find more detailed instructions on how to use the keypad, referred to as the “hand control,” and the LCD screen in the Celestron instruction manual.

The personnel at Skies Unlimited were knowledgeable and patient. They answered all of my questions. I came in to the store with the intent of buying a Celestron 8SE. I ended up leaving the store without buying anything. My biggest concern was portability. I wanted to get something that was small enough that I would not hesitate to take it out. After seeing the 8SE in the showroom I was concerned that it was big enough to be too big and too heavy. They did not have the 6SE on display so I walked out empty handed. After a weekend of reading reviews on the internet on both the 8SE and the 6SE I purchased a 6SE. I am very happy with the optical quality of the 6SE.
What I think the store personnel should emphasize (for the 6 or the 8) is to purchase an auxiliary power source-something beyond depending on AA batteries. The batteries are very short lived and when they are partially discharged the star alignment may not work or will work for a little while and then stop working. It took me several phone calls to Celestron Tech support to get them to suggest that the AA batteries are not a power source that can be depended on.
After living with the 6SE for a few weeks I am happy with choice to go with the smaller size. I think I will be able to see what I want to see. The drive mechanism is heavier than the optical tube for the 6SE. The same drive is used for the 8SE and the basic tripod is also the same. So, the difference in portability between the 8SE and the 6SE comes down to the optical tube. And yes, it would be nice to have 2 more inches.
