The Celestron NexStar 102 SLT is a compact beginner telescope that is sure to please the first time buyer.

The Celestron NexStar 102 SLT is a short tube refractor that is easy to transport and use. You'll find that astronomical viewing is a delight with this powerful 4" telescope. The NexStar 102 SLT offers a 63% increase in image brightness over 80mm models. This is an advantage when moving beyond the moon and planets to deep space objects.

Celestron NexStar 102 SLT

Like the other models in the SLT Series, the NexStar comes with a fully computerized hand control with a database of over 4,000 celestial objects! With its pre-assembled, adjustable steel tripod, the NexStar 102 SLT can be up and ready to use in a matter of minutes. Our new SkyAlign alignment technology and the included StarPointer Finderscope with a red LED makes aligning a breeze.

As with any telescope, the potential is subject to your local skies. A four-inch refractor reveals the veil nebula under magnitude 5.5 skies, as well as the spiral arms of the Whirlpool Galaxy under magnitude 6.5 skies. Neither of these sights are practical using even an eight-inch telescope under light polluted urban skies with a limiting magnitude of less than four. This is a fine, widefield telescope for studying the moon, star clusters, and bright nebulae. Lunar and planetary observing should be limited to 150X magnification. This is more than adequate to observe a wealth of detail on the lunar surface, including the central peaks of larger craters or even the numerous small craters within the larger ones. This telescope will also reveal Saturn's rings and the alternating light and dark bands and zones of Jupiter.

Because of its wide 1.7 ° field of view, the NexStar 102 SLT is optimal for scanning large areas of the sky and for superb terrestrial (land) viewing. A wonderful entry to mid-level astronomical scope, with the use of an optional erect image diagonal, the 102 SLT can also be used as a land-based spotting telescope.
