A fine example of a later model classic C8

This is a late model classic C8 that precedes the modern go to era. Early model C8 telescopes featured an AC synchronous motor for a clock drive. This telescope has a clock drive powered by a single 9 volt DC battery. The User's Manual shown in the alternate photo is copyrighted 1994. Other documentation included with the mount is dated 1996, which is where we are fixing the vintage of the telescope. It is in very good to excellent condition overall, and the optics are very clean. This indicates to us that it was well cared for over the years.

While this is clearly a functional telescope, it might also be considered something of a collector's item. The User's Manual is interesting to thumb through and appears to be more thorough than what you find today. Also noteworthy is that the address and telephone number listed for Celestron on the back cover are exactly the same as those in use today, some 22 years later. The mount was produced by Roger Tuthill, as astronomy shop owner from the period who operated out of northern New Jersey. Roger passed away in 2000, but not before producing quite a number of interesting accessories under his own brand name. As can be seen in one of the alternate images, the latitude angle is adjusted by means of a jack screw on the southern leg. The mount also includes three rubber vibration suppression pads which the instructions claim make a significant improvement to the stability of the system.

This telescope comes complete with an original Celestron case. Inside that case are a Celestron branded 25 mm Kelner eyepiece and a Roger Tuthill branded 15mm Plossl. They are clearly marked as being made in Japan, both on the barrels and their original boxes. Also inside the case is a Celestron dual axis drive controller, which does not appear to have ever been used. This telescope has a provision for adding a declination motor, but none was ever added. This probably explains why the drive controller appears to be unused.
