Polar Axis Finder Scopes

Polar Axis Finder Scopes
Polar axis finders are an option for many German equatorial mounts that enable you to quickly achieve a precise polar alignment. This is generally not required for visual observing where simply centering Polaris in the bore through the right ascension axis is adequate. Astronomical imaging does require a more precise polar alignment, and we normally recommend polar axis finders for mounts used in that application. Please note that Celestron mounts feature a software assisted polar alignment routine, and we also suggest that you try that first before deciding if this accessory is necessary.

Polar Axis Finder Scopes

Polar axis finders, also known as polar finder scopes, are an option for many German equatorial mounts. These tools enable the user to quickly achieve precise polar alignment.

Polar alignment scopes are essentially small finderscopes that give a magnified view of Polaris and the surrounding area. The user simply orients the mount so  that Polaris  is at the position designated by the etched reticle in the finder scope. In some cases this reticle is illuminated in polar scopes for easier identification of the proper position of Polaris.

Polar Axis Finder Scope Uses

Polar axis scopes are a tool used almost exclusively by astrophotographers, as general observation usually only requires an alignment close to Polaris. For astronomical imaging, however, a more precise alignment is needed. Since Polaris is located two-thirds of a degree away from the true celestial pole, aligning to Polaris will result in less accurate tracking and star trails in the images.

Please note that Celestron mounts feature a software assisted polar alignment routine, so we suggest trying that before deciding if this accessory is necessary. This routine, known as All Star Polar Alignment, offer a user-friendly means to accurately polar align the mount.
