The TeleVue 3x Barlow is a relatively inexpensive way to gain a lot of magnification, provided that your telescope is up to the task. The human animal always seems to think that more is better, and one of the most common newbie traits is to try to push their telescope to what we jokingly refer to as "stupid high powers." The simple facts are that most telescope designs cannot handle more than 2x magnification per millimeter of aperture. A 60mm refractor is never going to produce a crisp image at 500x or even 250x magnification. Even in cases where the mathematics work, the atmosphere itself may limit the practical magnification on any given night.
Stepping off of the soap box, the TeleVue 3X Barlow is a fine accessory, provided that you understand the limitations of both your telescope and the atmosphere.
